Wheelers stomp Fire By Craig DeVrieze/
QUAD-CITY TIMES
Behind a defense that forced five turnovers
and scored 14 points and an offense that clicked behind hot-handed quarterback Mike Cawley, the Quad-City Steamwheelers scored a 69-26 win over Louisville and climbed back into a tie for first place in the af2s Midwest Division on Saturday night
at The Mark of the Quad-Cities.
Thats the kind of team we are when we put it all together, crowed full-
back/
linebacker Josh Fourdyce, who caught a touchdown pass on offense
and scooped up a fumble on defense.
With,
perhaps, their most complete performance of the season, the Steamwheelers won for the fourth time in five starts and improved to 9-5 to force a deadlock at the top of the division with the Peoria
Pirates.
It just feels good to me, coach Rich Ingold said of the teams second-half rebound from a midseason string
of four losses in five games that included a pair of defeats by Peoria. We went through the adversity, but I never lost faith
in this team and this team never lost faith in me.
Because of the losses to the Pirates, the Steamwheelers said first place wont feel quite as good if the two teams finished the year tied.
Still, Ingold likes where his team
is going with two games left in a season in which they are banned from the af2 playoffs.
All I want to do is finish
the season strong, post a great record and show this franchise has character, Ingold said.
Saturday, the Steamwheelers built their biggest rout of the year behind interceptions for scores by Eric Thigpen and Chris Anthony, plus key second-quarter
picks by Hiawatha Phifer and LaVance Banks.
Fourdyces fumble recovery added to a 5-0 Wheeler edge in turnovers.
The pass rush also drew postgame praise. But, unlike a week ago, the great defense only complemented an offensive performance
keyed by Cawley. A big catalyst to the recent run of success after signing on five games ago, Cawley was coming off
a subpar effort in his home debut in last weeks 27-19 win over Bakersfield. Saturday, he completed 24 of 32 passes
for 274 yards and eight touchdowns as Quad-Cities matched its highest scoring output of the campaign. He balled, Fourdyce
said of Cawley. The guy is for real. His resumé speaks for itself. He is a leader and a good guy to follow because he has
been through the wars. Cawley had ample help. On offense, Anthony had nine catches for 99 yards and a couple of TDs;
Ira Gooch caught eight balls for 103 yards and a pair of scores; and Jeff Hewitt caught four passes for 40 yards, two of which
were scores. Even local products Fourdyce and T.J. Schneckloth stepped up as touchdown-catching targets. It
was fun tonight, Cawley said. I had good protection, and the guys were catching the ball real well. I hope the fans enjoyed
it more than last week. Quad-Cities took control in the second quarter with four unanswered scores and a pair of picks
after falling behind 13-7 one play into the second quarter. The Fire scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Matt
Hicks to Anthony Payton on the first play of the second quarter, but the Steamwheelers needed just two plays to knot it up. Anthony scored his second touchdown of the game, running under a 23-yard toss from Cawley.
Three plays later, Thigpens pick and 21-yard return put the hosts back in command. Banks then snuffed a third-and-goal
for the Fire with a goal-line pick on their next possession. Fourdyce rolled home with a Cawley swing pass five plays later
for a 27-13 Q-C lead. Schneckloth later caught a 4-yard swing pass and the Wheelers took a 34-13 edge into intermission. Louisville scored the only touchdown of the third quarter on its first possession,
but the Steamwheelers rode a Phifer pick to a 36-yard Gooch touchdown catch on the opening play of the closing quarter. The Steamwheelers piled it on with 35-point fourth quarter that included two Hewitt TDs and Anthonys interception return. The game
was tied at 7 aside after a quarter. Anthony caught a 10-yard Cawley scoring throw on the games opening possession, but Louisville
was able to counter after an illegal defense call gave them a fresh set of downs following an apparent Q-C stop. Craig
