Williams gets clearance to play
By Craig DeVrieze/ QUAD-CITY TIMES

Damon Williams has been cleared to play after recovering from a broken bone in his foot, but Steamwheelers coach Rich Ingold said he will take a go-slow approach to the third-year linemans possible return.

I want to see him in practice, Ingold said of Williams, who has been sidelined since a week into training camp.

The Steamwheelers certainly could use the 6-foot-4, 290-pound Williams for Saturdays game at Fresno.

Rookie lineman Cory Bern is doubtful with a foot injury of his own, and Dempsey Miller is ineligible, having been placed on the injured-reserve list last week.

With linebacker Raj Clark also bothered by a hamstring pull, Ingold would like to take seven linemen to Fresno, with Williams one of the seven.

If Williams is activated, Ingold plans to practice caution.

If we play him this week, we are just going to spot play him, Ingold said. I dont think he is going to be in condition to play a whole game. Were just hoping to play him a series each quarter.

Caldwell arrives after bye

The Steamwheelers line will get an additional reinforcement after next weeks bye.

Ingold said Lamon Caldwell, a 6-3, 295-pound lineman who played in nine games for the club last year, told him Tuesday he will join the club then.
Ingold said Caldwell currently is in Phoenix, working himself into game shape alongside his former Chicago Mt. Carmel High School teammate, NFL star Simeon Rice.

Bye-bye week

Ingold said the Steamwheelers wont work out during next weeks bye.

He said the week off is mandatory.

The guys dont get paid they dont get a game check, he noted.

Besides, said the coach, As banged up as we are, it will be good to let them get away from it.

Stat stuff

Frank Trentadue is third in sacks with 4.

Eric Thigpen ranks fourth in tackles with 24.

Hiawatha Phifer is tied for third in forced fumbles with a pair and shares fourth in interceptions with 4.

Tony Zimmerman ranks sixth in total offense with an average of 235 yards per game and seventh in passing yards with an average of 232 per game.

Chris Anthony ranks eighth in receiving yards (287) and ninth in receptions (21).

As a team, the Wheelers rank 10th in scoring offense (48 ppg), 10th in scoring defense (33.3 ppg), 17th in total offense (233 ypg) and 13th in total defense (220 ypg).

Wheelers face rigors of the road
By Craig DeVrieze/ QUAD-CITY TIMES

Quad-City Steamwheelers coach Rich Ingold doesnt fret the Fresno Frenzy so much as he frets the frenzy involved in getting to Fresno.

The Steamwheelers left for Californias Central Valley at 10 a.m. Friday, busing first to Chicago to catch a plane to San Francisco en route to a 3-hour bus trip to Fresno.

Its a marathon day, Ingold said before departing. And the buses are the worst part of it.

Worse yet would be retracing those steps Sunday with a blemish on a so-far perfect Steam-wheelers record.

The Wheelers will put their 3-0 mark on the line at 9:30 tonight (CDT) against the 0-3 expansion Frenzy.

Fresno lost its opener on a last-minute touchdown in Hawaii, fell 69-52 to San Diego in its only home game a week later and then lost 55-12 at Peoria last week.

The Steamwheelers hammered Hawaii 69-39 last week at The Mark of the Quad-Cities after initial wins of 39-34 over Bossier City and 36-27 at Louisville.

We are the better football team, Ingold said, but what I am trying to express to my guys is I dont want a letdown.

Ingold said the danger is that the Frenzy surely will be pumped to play the two-time defending league champions.

Everybody gets excited to play us its their season, he said.

One thing he discovered last week is that opponents who figure they cannot beat the champions might settle for beating up on them.

Hawaii cheap-shotted a lot, Ingold said, adding he has sent a tape of objectionable plays to the league. We came out of Hawaii banged up.

The Steamwheelers line will benefit from the return of third-year veteran Damon Williams. He was activated earlier this week after missing the first three games with a broken bone in his left foot.

Also making the trip is rookie lineman Cory Bern, who is recovering from an ankle sprain that knocked him out of last weeks game just ahead of intermission.

To make room for Williams on the 21-man roster, Ingold put receiver/defensive back Tim Bailey on short-term injured reserve. The two inactives for tonights game are WR/DB Quarnail Arnold and defensive specialist Shawn Orr.

The Wheelers will take a bye-week break after tonight, which means a loss would sting longer.

Steamwheelers edge Fresno 62-54 on road
QUAD-CITY TIMES

FRESNO, Calif. Quad-City quarterback Tony Zimmerman threw eight touchdown passes and sealed a road victory with a 1-yard sneak in the final seconds as the Steamwheelers held off Fresno 62-54 late Saturday night.

The Steamwheelers improved to 4-0, but they were severely tested by the expansion Frenzy, who fell to 0-4.

The game was in doubt until the final minute, when Zimmerman found Chris Anthony for 6 yards on third-and-5 from the Fresno 10. Zimmerman scored the games final touchdown two plays later. Ira Gooch caught four touchdown passes, and Anthony grabbed three. Zimmerman has 23 TD passes this season.

Saturday nights game at Selland Arena was tied 20-20 after the first quarter. After Fresno took its last lead at 34-32, Q-Cs Gooch caught a touchdown pass off the net on third-and-goal. The Wheelers led 39-37 at halftime but slowed down in the second half.

Gooch and Anthony caught TD passes in the third quarter, and Q-Cs Brian Hegnauer added a 20-yard field goal in the fourth to give the visitors a 56-47 lead. The Frenzy cut the lead to 56-54 on a scoring pass from Ricky Ray to Darnell Lacy with 3 minutes, 20 seconds to play.

The Steamwheelers defense which got an interception by Hiawatha Phifer on the last play of the first quarter gave up more than 40 points for the first time this season. Defensive specialist Pee Wee Woods was ejected from the game midway through the fourth quarter.

Q-C has this week off before traveling to Peoria on May 10. The Pirates (2-2) are second in the Midwest Division, two games behind the Wheelers.
